OSR Dir.i.R. Anton Berlakovich
“What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is the difference we have made in the lives of others that determines the meaning of our lives.”
— Nelson Mandela
With Toni Berlakovich, we lose a formative personality who was active with heart and passion.” “His visions and his commitment have shaped future generations.”
Anton Berlakovich was born in 1949 in Großwarasdorf (Central Burgenland) and completed his teacher training at the Pedagogical Academy in Eisenstadt. He worked as a secondary school teacher and subsequently served for more than twenty years as principal of the bilingual primary school in Parndorf. A central concern of his work was educational engagement within the Burgenland Croatian community.
As a dedicated and outstanding educator, as well as an editor and author of school textbooks, he produced numerous instructional works. In 1990, he assumed the chairmanship of the Croatian Adult Education Center (HNVŠ).
Anton Berlakovich was also active in municipal politics, serving as a member of the local council and as executive councillor responsible for social affairs and culture in Parndorf.
As the founder of the Parndorf Summer Theatre, he made a fundamental contribution—through foresight, passion, and tireless dedication since 1996—to the revitalization of the cultural landscape in Northern Burgenland, a legacy that continues to this day. For nearly three decades, the Parndorf Summer Theatre has offered audiences both entertainment and artistic enjoyment.
As Honorary President of the Fanny Elßler Society, he was a wise advisor and a gracious friend, showing deep respect for the arts and great appreciation for the people behind the scenes. Through his knowledge, passion, and personality, he made a significant contribution to preserving the memory of the renowned and internationally celebrated dancer Fanny Elßler through his publications.
In recognition of his outstanding achievements, he received an award from the Federal Minister for Education, Arts and Culture, Elisabeth Gehrer, honoring his commitment as an educator and author. The Province of Burgenland awarded him the Gold Medal of Honor for his services.
The Ordo Equestris Vini Europae, also a cooperation partner of the Fanny Elßler Society, conferred upon him a decoration for his work “Fanny Elssler in America.”
His decades of dedication and his contributions will never be forgotten.
In grateful remembrance, we bow before a great personality.
Toni, may God reward your good deeds and welcome you into His kingdom.
